3^2-x^2=8
9 - x^2 = 8

x^2 = 9 - 8
x^2 = 1
x^2 - 1 = 0
(x-1)*(x+1) = 0
x-1 = 0 or
x+1 = 0
So x = 1 or x = -1

I think the other tutor misread the problem.
3^(2-x^2)=8
3^2*3^(-x^2)=8
9*3^(-x^2)=8
1/(3^(x^2))=8/9
3^(x^2)=9/8
x=-sqrt((log(9/8))/(log(3)))
x=-0.327431
x=sqrt((log(9/8))/(log(3)))
x=0.327431
= your answer
