A LOG table??? You've got to be kidding!!! Do they still have those around? Get yourself a calculator that does logs!!

Seriously, if you are looking up log 5, or log 50, or log 500 it will all be the same spot on the table. Just look down the first column and find 50. The first entry to the right of 50 (under the 0 column) should be 6990. This number is called the mantissa of the logarithm. Since the number 5 is between 1 and 10, the rest of the logarithm (called the characteristic) will be 0.

log 5 = 0.6990
log 50 = 1.6990
log 500 = 2.6990
log 5000 = 3.6990
etc.
