Here's the formula for translating from logarithmic form to exponential form. It also works
in the reverse direction and allows you to transform from exponential form to logarithmic form:
.
Logarithmic form: Equivalent Exponential form:
.
In your problem, I'm going to presume that the 2 is the base of the logarithm that you were given.
So you were given:
.
.
Compare this to the logarithmic form I gave you and you will see that B = 2, A = x, and Z = y.
.
All you have to do then is go to the equivalent exponential form and substitute these values
for B, A, and Z. When you do that substitution you get the exponential form to be:
.
.
If you are given the exponential form and you need to get the logarithmic form you just
go in the reverse direction. You compare what you are given to the exponential form and identify
what is B, what is Z, and what is A. Then you look at the logarithmic form and plug in those
values for B, Z, and A.
.
Hope this makes sense to you. It just requires a little memorization of the forms and some
practice.
