Question 1099279: I have a problem:ln%28x%29=5163. I got the correct answer on a problem similar to this: ln%28x%29=-4.16. My process for the latter problem was to rewrite it as e%5E-4.16=xand then simplified it to 1.56x10%5E-2=x. My answer book indicated that answer as correct. When I tried to apply the same formula to the former problem, the calculator put up a notification saying ERROR. What was I doing wrong? Do I have the wrong formula and just got the second problem right by accident? I am using a CASIO fx-9750GII. Thanks for taking the time to help!

You got the error message because no calculator can handle
numbers as large as e5163.

However, you can write numbers too large for the calculator
in scientific notation.  Here's how to write e5163 in 
scientific notation:

e%5E5163%22%22=%22%2210%5Ek

Take natural logs of both sides

5163%22%22=%22%22ln%2810%5Ek%29

5163%22%22=%22%22k%2Aln%2810%29

5163%2Fln%2810%29%22%22=%22%22k

2242.26241%22%22=%22%22k

Substitute in original equation above:

e%5E5163%22%22=%22%2210%5E2242.26241%22%22=%22%2210%5E2242%2A10%5E0.26241%22%22=%22%2210%5E2242%2A1.829827%22%22=%22%221.829827%2A10%5E2242
