Question 74894: if u enlarge a photo print to bring the shorter side from 1/2 inches to 3 inches, the longer side would go from 3/4 inches to how many centimeters?
Answer by bucky(2189) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The process used in this problem is called scaling.
.
By enlarging one side from inch to 3 inches in size, you make it 6 times bigger because
if you multiply 6 times the you get 3.
.
But if you increase that side by 6 times, you will also increase the other side by 6 times.
Since the other side was inches, increasing it by 6 times enlarges it to:
.
inches. So the longer side is enlarged to 4.5 inches. Almost done.
.
Note that the problem calls for the answer in centimeters. There are 2.54 centimeters
per inch. So to convert 4.5 inches to centimeters, you multiply 4.5 inches times 2.54 cm
and the answer in cm becomes 11.43 cm.
.
Hope this helps you to understand the basic process of scaling. Everything increases
(or decreases) in size by the same factor. In this problem, that factor was by 6.
