Question 706089: Hi. My name is Allen and I can't figure out this problem. I solved for the hypotenuse but I don't know what to do after ...or if I was even supposed to find the hypotenuse. Please show me how to solve this problem. Thank you!
Two cars leave the origin; one goes north at 65 mph and the other goes south at 60 mph. After how many hours will they be 200 miles apart?
__________ hours

Allen, the situation is simpler than needing a hypotenuse. North and South are opposite directions. The cars travel makes no triangle. You simply have the northbound driver having gone 65*h miles and the southbound driver having gone in the opposite direction for 60*h miles; When they are 200 miles apart, we have
65h+60h=200
h=8/5
h=1 hour and 36 minutes.
