Pencils sell at D dollars for 1 dozen. At this price, what would be the total cost of M pencils?
D dollars per dozen-----That means that they sell for D/12 dollars per pencil
If one pencil costs D/12 dollars, then M pencils must cost (D/12)*M dollars
So the answer is: (D*M/12)
ck
Lets say D=24 dollars
And M=10
24 dollars per dozen equals 24/12 or $2 per pencil
Then 10 pencils would cost 2(10) or $20
D*M/12=(24*10)/12=240/12=$20 At least it works for these numbers
Hope this helps---ptaylor
