This means the job requires 10*12 = 120 man/days to complete

I understand this to mean how many more days will be required after half of them quit. Let x = number of more days required:

original group + half the group = 120 man/days
(8*5) + 4x = 120
40 + 4x = 120
4x = 120 - 40
4x = 80
x = 20 days to complete the job:
