Question 4544: How do I solve 3x-5y=-11 and x+2y=6 algebraically?
2x+y=-3 3x+y=8

Answer by glitzgirl_14(11)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3x-5y=-11
2x+y=-3
Solve the second equation for y:
y=-2x-3
Put that equation in the first equation for y:
3x-5(-2x-3)= -11
Distributive property:
3x+10x+15= -11
Combine like terms:
13x+15= -11
13x= -26
x=-2
Put -2 in for x in 'y=-2x-3':
y=-2* -2 -3
y=4-3
y=1
x+2y = 6
3x+y = 8
Solve the first equation for x:
x=-2y +6
Put that equation into the second equation for x:
3(-2y+6)+y = 8
-6y+18+y=8
-5y+18=8
-5y=-10
y=2
put 2 in for y in the first equation solved for x:
x=-2*2+6
x= -4+6
x= 2
