Let's look at a series of numbers (all in numerical order for your convenience):
23, 23, 23, 24, 24, 25, 28, 28, 31, 31, 32, 33, 34, 34, 35, 36, 37, 37, 38, 40, 40, 41, 42, 42, 42, 42, 42, 43, 43, 46, 47, 48, 49
Looking at the 10's column of all these numbers we essentially have 20's 30's and 40's. These numbers become your stems:

now look at the ONES or UNITS column ... these are your leaves.
