Question 253246: Linda and Sue are raising money for a charity by participating in a walkathon. Their sponsors have pledged $5 for each mile each girl walks. Sue begins at point A and walks 5 miles north, then 6 miles east, and finally 3 miles north again to point B. If Linda walks directly ina straight line from A to B, how many more dollars does Sue raise than Linda?

What you have is a right triangle with sides of:
6 & (5+3=8) & need to find the hypotenuse.
The formula for the sides of a right triangle is:
a^2+b^2=c^2
6^2+8^8=c^2
36+64=c^2
100=c^2
c=sqrt100
c=10 miles from point a to point b in a straight line.
10*5=$50 dollars is the amount raised by Linda.
Sue raised (5+6+3)*5=14*5=$70 dollars which was
70-50=$20 dollars more than Linda raised..
