let y = side of the 2nd square

Write an equation for each statement
:
The perimeter of one square is 12cm larger than that of another square,
4x - 4y = 12
simplify, divide by 4
x - y = 3
x = y + 3
:
and it's area exceeds the area of the other by 39 square centimeters.
x^2 - y^2 = 39
replace x with (y+3)
(y+3)^2 - y^2 = 39
FOIL
y^2 + 6y + 9 - y^2 = 39
combine like terms
6y = 39 - 9
6y = 30
y = 30/6
y = 5 cm, side of the 2nd square
Find x
x - 5 = 3
x = 3 + 5
x = 8 cm, side of the 1st square
