"A number is 1/4 of another number" ----> y = 1/4x ---> 4y = x or x = 4y

"their difference is 57" ----> x - y = 57

x - y = 57

4y - y = 57

3y = 57

y = 57/3

y = 19

x = 4y

x = 4*19

x = 76

So the two numbers are 76 and 19

Let x be the first number, and y the second number.
The problem tells you the following:
y - x = 57
y = 4x (you could also work it as 1/4y = x)
Substitute the value for y
4x - x = 57
Subtract
3x = 57
Divide by 3
x = 19
Since you know x and know that y is 4 times x, you can find y by multiplying x*4 (19*4=76)
.
Prove by putting the values into the original problem.
"A number (19) is 1/4 of another number (76). If their difference is 57, find the two numbers."
76 - 19 does indeed equal 57.
