-5²+3²= 34
They both have 2s as exponents. I'm sorry I didn't know how to write the. I always get -34 as my answer. But it is supposed to be a positive 34. Thank you for your assistance.

Put the parentheses around the -5

  (-5)²  +    3²  = 34

(-5)(-5) + (3)(3) = 34

   25    +    9   = 34
