Let x (smaller) and y (larger) be the two numbers

The difference of two numbers is 4
y-x=4
y=4+x..............(1)
5 times the smaller number is four more than three times the larger
5x=3y+4..............(2)
Put the value of y in above equation
5x=3(x+4)+4
5x=3x+12+4
5x=3x+16
5x-3x=16
2x=16
2x/2=16/2
x=8
Put the value of x in (1)
y=4+x..............(1)
y=4+8
y=12

Two numbers are = 8, 12
