: I have worked this problem til I cant see straight. The ans in the book shows an answer of 15-3y. I show 18-2y so I think I am leaving out a step someplace.
The problem is 3[6-(y+1)]. would I not do the () first which is 2y so the problem would now be 3[6-2y] so this would be 3(6-2y) 18-4y? Can you please not really show me the ans per say but show me step by step where I went wrong. My family would sure appreciate it too since my high school daughter cant see where they got the ans either. Thank you so much for this service

Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3[6-(y+1)]
Start with the inner parentheses, as follows:
=3[6-y-1]
Simplify inside the brackets to get:
=3[5-y]
Apply the distributive rule as follows:
=15-3y
