Question 499403: Need help with the order of operations. Please help me figure out what I'm doing wrong =/
36 ÷ 4(5 - 2) + 6 =
So I know the order is PEMDAS (Parenthesis/brackets, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition, Subtraction). So I believe you would start by subtraction 2 from 5.
So...
36 ÷ 4 (3) + 6 =
So multiplication comes next
36 ÷ 12 + 6 =
Then division
3 + 6 =
Then at last Addition
9
Somewhere I keep getting this all wrong and it's really frustrating me. Please help, and thanks. Oh and any other examples you could show me of how to do these kind of problems would be greatly appreciated. Or websites with practice problems or anything that could help really.
Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The problem occurs when you go from
36 ÷ 4 (3) + 6 =
to
36 ÷ 12 + 6 =
PEMDAS is used starting with "P" (for Parenthesis) and ending with "S" (for Subtraction) and you go from left to right if there are multiple steps for any single given letter or if you're on the same precedence level.
In the case of 36 ÷ 4 (3) + 6, multiplication and division have the same precedence, so we work left to right to get
36 ÷ 4 (3) + 6
9(3) + 6
27 + 6
Now add to get 33
So 36 ÷ 4(5 - 2) + 6 = 33
