() denotes an interval not including the endpoints, while [] denotes an interval including the endpoints. For example, (-2, 5) specifies all real numbers between -2 and 5 (not including -2, 5), while [-2, 5] is the same interval, except -2 and 5 are included. In the same manner, we can also denote intervals such as [-2, 5) and (-2, 5].
