This is for an online algebra class. I tried to follow the example which shows how to change the mixed fraction into a improper fraction adn then you multiply to get you answer. When I did that i came up with 5/7*7/3 but you flip the second fraction adn you get 3/7*5/7 and that gave me 15/49. But these are multiple choice questions and that answer was not one of the ones that i can choose from. I did the problem many more times and still have not come up with an answer that is one of my choices. If it helps my choices are: 22/19 19/22 110/8 12/5 209/8 13/4 Can you help me with this problem? Divide:
(5 1/2)/(4 3/4)
Your first step was a step in the right direction, but your answer was not!
Change the mixed numbers to their impoper-fractional eqivalents:
N.B. The X means multiply.
5 1/2 = (5X2+1)/2 = 11/2
4 3/4 = (4X4+3)/4 = 19/4
Now you can divide:
...and the rule is..."Copy-Flip-Flip" which means...Copy the first fraction, flip the sign from division to multiplication, and Flip (invert) the second fraction.
Multiply and simplify.
Divide top and bottom by 2.
