Now I can simplify this equation by doing the first equation like this:
8a - 6 = 2a
The second equation I did this:
4a + 5 = 9a
Now I can combine these to be:
2a + 9a = 11a
Is this the correct method?

You can only add and subtract "like" terms.
That means you cannot add apples to oranges.
You have 8a-6+4a+5
You have 8a and you have 4a: that gives you 14a
you have -6+5; that gives you -1
Answer: 14a-1
