well lets hope I do the equation the way it is suppose to be
:
your just plugging in the value of -1 into the variable y and checking to see if this makes a true or false statement

since 15 does not equal -1.....-1 is NOT a solution. If the equation is different that this email me the correct equation..thanks Mathtut

Do you mean:
?
If so, then to determine if a value is a solution to an equation, you simply substitute that value for the variable and do the arithmetic to determine if you have a true statement or not, thus:
is clearly a false statement.
(Unless you are talking about Financial System bailouts and such).
Substituting -1 for the variable y does not result in a true statement, therefore -1 is not a solution to the equation.
Just for fun, let's see what the solution set does contain:
.
Now add -3 to both sides:
.
Now multiply both sides by
:
.
Hence, the solution set contains the single element 3.
