Question 173054: This is an expression involving square roots using the FOIL method.
(sqrt 6 + sqrt 5)(sqrt 6 - sqrt 5)
(sqrt 6 x sqrt 6)-(sqrt 6 x sqrt 5)+(sqrt 5 x sqrt 6)-(sqrt 5 x sqrt 5)
sqrt 36 - sqrt 30 + sqrt 30 - sqrt 25
6 - sqrt 30 + sqrt 30 - 5
Ok, here's where I'm confused: if the negative and positive of sqrt 30 cancel out, does that leave me with 6 - 5 = 1, or 6 - (-5) = 11? Thank you.

I understand the confusion.
Sometimes it's better to keep the numbers separated and not combine them.
This is one of those cases.
