You are right on when you say that "the sum of"...means to add.
When you see the sum of and x, it mean first find the square of a, then add the result to x.
For example:
Find the sum of and 10.
First square the 6 to get 36 then add this to 10 to get a total of 46 (36+10 = 46))
The result of adding is called the "sum".
The result of multiplying is called the "product".
The result of subtracting is called the "difference".
The result of dividing is called the "quotient".
