find the length of each piece.
:
let x = length of the longer piece
then
(x-5) = the length of the shorter
the equation
x + (x-5) = 85
2x - 5 = 85
2x = 85 + 5
2x = 90
x = 90/2
x = 45 cm is the longer piece
you can find the length of the shorter piece, (their sum will be 85)
