first you must take the like terms
and combine them.
but you must keep them on opposite sides
of the equal sign.

step 1:
subtract 5x from both sides.
9x-5x+7=-3
step 2:
subtract 7 from both sides.
9x-5x=-7-3
step 3:
now simplify both sides.
4x=-10
step 4:
divide 4 by both sides.
x=10/4
step 5:
simplify the fraction.
x=5/2
