Question 1049616: looking at this equation 6/2(1+2) many quote the rule of order PEMDAS to solve it for an answer of 9. I wonder if they are misinterpreting what the P means.
So the question is, does it mean solve only what is in the parenthesis, or does it really mean solve the parenthetical equation? if it means the later, then the answer is 1. my Casio calculator solves it as 1, Google on line solves it as 9.

----
The "P" in PEMDAS means "evaluate the parenthesis"
-----------------
My TI-84 gives an answer of 9.
-----
6/2(1+2)
P gives 6/2(3)
Applying M and D from left to right gives
= 3*3 = 9
