Think of this as -1 multiplied by itself 3 times:

Here is a general rule:
If you multiply a negative number by itself
an EVEN number of times, the result is POSITIVE

If you multiply a negative number by itself
an ODD number of times, the result is NEGATIVE

This last rule is the one to follow in this case
