Question 170531: I am not a student, just doing some practice math for an engineering tech asst position at my current employer. I haven't been to school in 11 years and am just trying to refresh my memory. The problem I got stummped on is below:
4x-7=x/2
I've tried to mulitply/divide/add/subtract and somewhere I am getting all jumbled up. If you solve it could you please show me the steps taken. I am missing something due to there being a variable on both sides of the equation.

we`re supposed to solve x & y,right?
can we substitute any number we want for x or y to solve one of them?

Question 171501: My niece was given an algebra problem for extra credit. I tried to solve it for her. But there were 2 Var. and only one equation. I tried to simplify the question:
5.5x -1.5y= 3.5x
soln.
5.5x-3.5x-1.5y=3.5x-3.5x
2x-1.5y=0
She said te answers were x=3 & y=4
How did they get that?
