Can somebody help please?
The mythical town of Alphaville had a population of 10,000 people in 1930. Since then, the population has doubled every 23 years. (For example in 1953, the population equalled 20,000; in 1976 it was 40,000; in 1999, it was 80,000 and so on).
What was the population in 1980?

w + z

I do not understand how they arrived at this answer. To be honest I do not understand how to approach this problem. I can make it this far:
x - z = xy + w
x = xy + w + z
x - xy = w + z

My answer: 9x^2/4y
Answer given by the practice exam that I am working on: 9x^2/16y^2
I don't understand why 4y would be squared.
