Question 99034: I'm having trouble with this. Please help.
2x + 4/3 + 3x + 7/5 = 10x + 11/3 The number 3 after the first slash is under the 2x + 4 and the same with the /5 and /3. I wasn't sure how to write it.

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
[(2x + 4)/3] + [(3x + 7)/5] = [(10x + 11)/3]
-----------------
When you have an equation with denominators, get rid of them.
--------------------
Multiply thru by 15 to get:
5(2x+4) + 3(3x+7) = 5(10x+11)
10x+20 + 9x+21 = 50x+55
19x + 41 = 50x + 55
31x = -14
x = -14/31

(2x+4)/3 + 3x + 7/5 = 10x + 11/3
Ok the first step that we will take to solve this problem is to rewrite the problem using common demoninator.
2x/3(5/5)+ 4/3(5/5) + 3x + 7/5(3/3) = 10x + 11/3(5/5)
Now that we have done that we can start solving the problem.
10x/15 + 20/15 + 3x + 21/15 = 10x + 55/15
This next step may be a bit tricky but we will add 3x to 10x/15. We do this by multiplying 15 times 3x and then adding that total to 10x.
15 * 3x = 45x...Now add 45 to 10x...45+10x= 55x...Now moving on with the problem.
Next we add 20/15 to 21/15...20/15+21/15=41/15
55x/15 + 41/15 = 10x + 55/15
Now we want to get x on a side by itself and we by substracting 41/15 on both sides and substracting 10x on both sides
55x/15 + 41/15 - 41/15 -10x = 10x + 55/15 - 10x - 41/15
55x/15 - 10x = 55/15 - 41/15
Now just like we did before we are going to multiply 15 times 10x. 15 * -10x = 150x...-150x+55x=-95x
-95x/15 = 14/15
Now we are able to get x by itself and we do this by dividing -95x/15 on both sides.
(-95x/15)/(-95/15) = (14/15)/(-95/15)
Now we see that -95/15 cancels out and leaves us with just x and on the other side 15 cancels out and leaves us with -14/95...moving on
x = -14/95
And that is it...Hope this help you in anyway...Good Luck...:)
Ok after review the problem again i realize that someone else had already solved the problem..If I read your problem correct the first time then the first solution is correct but if I read it wrong then the second solution is correct.
In according to the way you explain your problem after reading it a second time.
I do not suggest that you get rid of fractions because you will be using them for the rest of your life. So this is how I worked it.
(2x+4)/3 + (3x+7)/5 = (10x+11)/3
2x/3(5/5)+4/3(5/5)+ 3x/5(3/3)+7/5(3/3)= 10x/3(5/5)+ 11/3(5/5)
10x/15 + 20/15 + 9x/15 + 21/15 = 50x/15 + 55/15
19x/15 + 41/15 = 50x/15 + 55/15
19x/15 + 41/15 - 41/15 -50x/15 =50x/15 + 55/15 - 50x/15 -41/15
-31x/15 = 14/15
(-31x/15)/(-31/15)= (14/15)/(-31/15)
Now -31/15 cancels out and so does 15 on the other side.
x = -14/31
