Write your expressions in pencil. Erase every and write (6) in its place. Erase every and write (4) in its place. Do the arithmetic.

Simplify your expression first by collecting and reducing like term.

After you get the simple (the simpler, the simplest) expression, substitute numbers.

It will save you from unnecessary calculations.
