Multiply both sides by 2.

Multiply both sides by 7.

Collect like terms in the LHS.

Add -7x to both sides.

Multiply both sides by the reciprocal of 17.

Identities are true for any value of the variable. Inconsistencies are false for any value of the variable. This equation is true for one value of the variable.
