Question 987747: Sophie and Clair are having a foot race. Claire is given a 100 foot head start. If Sophie is running at 5 feet per second and Clair is running at 3 feet per second:
i. After how many seconds will Sophie catch claire?
ii. If the race is 500 feet, who wins?
Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Sophie is running 2 ft/sec faster than Clair. She is 100 feet behind. She will catch her in 50 seconds, 100 ft/50 ft/sec
in 50 seconds Sophie will run 250 feet.
In 50 seconds, Clair will run 150 feet, but she had 100 foot head start, so she will also go 250 feet. If Sophie catches Clair at 250 feet, Sophie will win the race at 500 feet.
