A baseball has a diameter of approximately 3 inches and a softball has a diameter of approximately 5 inches About how many times as great is the volume of a softball as the volume of a baseball? Found 3 solutions by Boreal, Edwin McCravy, Alan3354:Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website! They are both functions of the cube of the radius or even the cube of the diameter for that matter, since one is a linear function of the other.
V=(4/3) pi r^3
If you do volumes of both, the (4/3) and the pi cancel
Do ratios of r^3
2.5^3/1.5^3
=15.625/3.375
=4.63
Note:
The ratio of their respective diameters would be 125/27, which would be the same
Volume of a sphere varies as the cube of the diameter:
A softball is times larger than a baseball, volume-wise.

----------------
Volume is a function of the cube of the diameter.
--> 5^3/3^3 = 125/27
=~ 4.63 times as great
--> 3.63 times greater.
