Question 970517: Hi. I am in 7th grade advanced math and I have questions about my homework but my teacher won't help me. My question is: 4x-9=3.5x-9. I was absent the day we learned these types of equations with variables on both sides. My teacher says I am supposed to remember these types of equations from last year, which would be 6th grade, but we started common core this year so this is all new to me. Also, I am supposed to know this because I am going to Algebra 1 next year. Sorry for the detailed response. Could you please help me? Thanks, Jillian

If you want to solve it for x, you should say, "Solve for x."

4x-9 = 3.5x-9
Add 9 to each side.
4x = 3.5x
Subtract 3.5x from each side.
0.5x = 0
x = 0
