7a -0.17 = 3a -2.9
subtract 3a from both sides of =
4a -0.17 = -2.9
add 0.17 to both sides of =
4a = -2.73
divide both sides of = by 4
a = -0.6825

check answer by substituting for a in original equation
7(-0.6825) -0.17 = 3(-0.6825) -2.9
−4.7775 -0.17 = −2.0475 -2.9
−4.9475 = -4.9475
