Let's use x and y for our 2 numbers
one is 5 greater than the other so
x = y + 5
we know y is the smaller number since x is 5 greater
twice the smaller number will be 2y
2y + x = 26
substitute y + 5 into the equation for x
2y + y + 5 = 26
combine like terms
3y + 5 = 26
subtract 5 from both sides
3y = 21
divide 3 from both sides to get the variable y by itself
y = 7
plug 7 into x = y + 5 for y
x = 7 + 5
x = 12
answer: the two numbers are 7 and 12
