vertex form is:
y = A(x-h)^2 + k
where
(h,k) is the vertex
.
y=-x^2-4x-3
group the x's:
y=(-x^2-4x)-3
factor out -:
y=-(x^2+4x)-3
now,complete the square inside the parenthesis
start by adding (b/2)^2
y=-(x^2+4x+4)-3
to balance we need to add 4:
y=-(x^2+4x+4)-3 +4
y=-(x^2+4x+4)+1
y=-(x+2)^2+1 (answer)
