See my Lesson Plan on "Basic Equation Solving" in Linear Equations. The very first step in solving regular equations is to remove all parentheses that might be in the equation. This is using the Distributive Property. This allows you to combine like terms and then get all variable terms on one side, with number terms on the other side. The first step, however, is Distributive Property!!
