Question 888732: 0.5x^2=0.75x+5
Answer by LinnW(1048) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
add ( -0.75x-5 ) to each side
multiply each side by 100
50x^2 - 75x - 500 = 0
divide each side by 25
2x^2 - 3x - 20 = 0
We want two numbers whose product is (2)(-20) = -40 and sum is -3
-8 and 5 work for this
2x^2 -8x +5x -20 = 0
Factor by grouping
2x(x - 4) +5(x - 4) = 0
(2x + 5)(x - 4) = 0
So x = -2.5 or x = 4
