Question 87132: one number is 12 more than the other. The larger number is 7 times the smaller number. Find the number.

Answer by longjonsilver(2297) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let smaller number be x and larger one y
we are told 2 things:
1. one number is 12 more than the other --> y = 12 + x
2. the larger number is 7 times the smaller number --> y = 7x
so both equations have "y equals" so if y equals both things then surely both those must be the same?
So we get 12 + x = 7x
12 = 6x
so x = 2
and therefore y = 18
cheers
