They aren't asking you what x equals. You are just dividing one expression by
another expression. The quotient will also be an expression
:
You can use ordinary long division, will use "......." to keep things lined up
Much the same as you do with numbers
:

(x-1)|3x^3 + 4x^2 - 4x - 6
...........3x^3 - 3x^2; choose 1st term in the quotient: 3x^2 * x = 3x^3
...........------------
........................7x^2 - 4x
........................7x^2 - 7x; choose the 2nd term: 7x * x = 7x^2
........................----------
.....................................+3x - 6
.....................................+3x - 3; choose the 3rd term: 3* x = 3x
