I worked as follows:
5x+8=2(x+4)
5x+8=2x+8
5x+8-8 =2x+8-8
5x=2x
5x-2x=2x-2x
3x

After you subtract 2x from both sides, you should have

3x = 0

Divide both sides to get this final answer (in red)

3x = 0

3x/3 = 0/3

1x = 0

x = 0

Check:

5x+8=2(x+4)

5(0)+8=2(0+4) ... plug in x = 0

0 + 8 = 2(4)

8 = 8

So the answer checks out
