Let n = a number.
We are given that
(1) 3*n + 7 = 13
Now solve for n.
Subtract 7 from each side of (1) and get
(2) 3*n = 13 - 7 or
(3) 3*n = 6
Now divide each side of (3) by 3 and get
(4) n = 6/3 or
(5) n = 2
Check your answer using (1).
Is (3*2 + 7 = 13)?
Is (6 + 7 = 13)?
Is (13 = 13)? Yes
Answer: The number is 2.
