Question 832659: The *width* of a rectangular garden is one-third its length, and its perimeter is 32 m. Find the dimensions of this garden.
Answer by JulietG(1812) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Perimeter = 2 length + 2 width
P = 32
W = 1/3L
Substitute the value of W into the original equation:
32 = 2L + 2(1/3L)
32 = 2L + 2/3L
32 = 2 2/3 L or 8/3 L
Multiply each side by 3 to get rid of the fraction
32*3 = 8L
96 = 8L
Divide each side by 8
12 = L
.
Now that you have the length, you can tell the width -- 1/3 of the length, or 4.
