Question 818601: A farmer planted 65% of his farmland with onions, 20% of his land with cotton, and the rest with soybeans. The soybeans are on 90 acres of land. How many acres of farmland does the farmer have? Solve with an equation.
I know the answer is 600 acres, I just don't know how to create an equation that would work to solve this. I used cross multiplication but the purpose of the lesson is to make an equation to solve it and I get stuck when i need to use percentages. Your help will be appreciated. Please and Thank You.

A farmer planted 65% of his farmland with onions, 20% of his land with cotton, and the rest with soybeans. The soybeans are on 90 acres of land. How many acres of farmland does the farmer have? Solve with an equation.
----------------------
Let "x" be the total acreage.
Equation:
soybeans = 100% - (65%+20%) = 15%
-----
15%*x = 90 acres
----
x = 90/0.15
-----
x = 600 acres
----------------------
