The length of a rectangle decreased by 6cm is equal to the width. If the perimeter is 68 cm, find its dimensions.

If we let L=length, w=width we get

and the perimeter equals


Plug in L-6 into w and let P=68

Distribute

Combine like terms


Add 12 to both sides

Divide both sides by 4

So this is the length
Use this to find the width:


So the dimensions are width=14, length=20
Check:
plug in L=20, w=14, P=68

works
