.
The first thing to set as a goal in solving this problem is to get all the terms containing
an x on one side of the equation and all the terms that are just plain old numbers on the
other side of the equation.
.
Let's try to get the x terms on the left side and the numbers on the right side.
.
Notice you have a 6x on the right side. You can get rid of it by subtracting 6x from the
right side. But whatever you do to the right side you also have to do to the left side.
So we need to subtract 6x from both sides. The subtraction gives you:
.
.
Combine the terms containing x on the left side and also on the right side. The result is:
.
.
So far, so good. We have a single term containing an x and it is on the left side, just
as we planned. But we have a -4 on the left side and our goal was to move it to the right side.
You can do this by adding +4 to the left side to cancel the -4, but then you also have to
add +4 to the right side. This addition gives you: and the two numbers
on the right side can be added to give you: .
.
To solve for just x, you can divide by the multiplier of x. This multiplier is -3 and the
division becomes:
.
.
.
So the answer is reduced to x = -3
.
As a check you can substitute -3 for x in the original problem and you should get
which shows that the answer x = -3 is correct.
.
Hope this helps you to work your way through the problem.
Answer by funmath(2933) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3x-4=6x+5
3x-6x-4=6x-6x+5
-3x-4=0+5
-3x-4=5
-3x-4+4=5+4
-3x=9
-3x/-3=9/-3
x=-3
:
Check by letting x=-3 and see if both sides of the equation equal.
3(-3)-4=6(-3)+5
-9-4=-18+5
-13=-13 We're right!!!
Happy Calculating!!!!
