SOLUTION: 2 (x+4)= 3x
Just looking for an example close to this.
I got as far as...
2x + 8 = 3x
then do I subtract 2x from each side or 8?

Answer by checkley75(3666) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2(X+4)=3X
2X+8=3X NOW YOU CAN SUBTRACT 3X FROM BOTH SIDES THUS:
2X-3X+8=3X-3X NOW COMBINE THE X TERMS THUS:
-X+8=0 NOW SUBTRACT 8 FROM BOTH SIDES THUS:
-X+8-8=-8 NOW COMBINE TERMS
-X=-8 NOW MULTIPLY BOTH SIDES BY -1 THUS:
X=8
PROOF
2(8+4)=3*8
2(12)=24
24=24

GOOD WORK, SO FAR!!!!
NOW YOU SUBTRACT 2x FROM BOTH SIDES:
2x-2x + 8 = 3x-2x Now we can collect like term (x's and numbers)
+8=x or
x=8----------------------ans
When solving an equation you generally want to get the unknowns on one side of the equal sign and the numbers on the other. This may require adding and/or subtracting both unknowns and numbers. Example:
2x+8=3x-4 you can subtract an 8 and a 3x from both sides or you can subtract a 2x from and add a 4 to both sides------Try both ways and see if you get the same answer.
Hope this helps----ptaylor
