"A 43 inch pipe is cute into 2 pieces. If 1 piece has a length of x inches, what is the length, in inches of the other piece?"
Is the answer as simple as
43-x=y or 43=x+y ??

The answer you wrote is the only possible answer unless the problem gives more information.


43-x=y is 43 (total length) minus the length of the first piece.
